I am deeply honoured to welcome all to this International Conference & Expo on Agriculture & Veterinary Sciences: Research and Technology. It seems to me that the conference is being held at a critical moment in the coming together of various challenges that our small planet is facing. We all have different agendas but I am sure that if we were all to be asked which are the 10 key challenges the world is now facing, we would include growing political tensions across the world, growing isolationism among the major players in the world, growing inequality, faster armaments race. All of us are being caught in these nets, with all the contradictions between politics and economics, between the priorities of the rich and the poor, the demands of the major world exporters and the growing resistance by those at the bottom of the pyramid.
And here, I would suggest is where we can make and must make a stand. A stand on behalf of those who are at the bottom of the pyramid. I was very privileged to be taught by one of the greatest economists of our age, the eminent Amartya Sen, winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Economics. He has devoted his life to the study of famines and he stated years ago that the key challenge for the poorest is access to food. I hope that most of us at this conference feel we can help transform the agricultural challenges of the poorest.
More than 12,000 people a day die of starvation, in a world that has never been richer and more able to meet all sorts of challenges. Let us make this the challenge of our day, or our conference. That we shall bring agricultural knowledge, techniques, and change at the right level, with the right tools. South-South cooperation can play a pivotal role and make a critical difference to the lives of millions of people, rapidly and effectively.
This is our challenge. Let us address it. Let us work together.
Hope to meet you all @ Hyderabad, India,
